Serginho van Dijk set to face former Adelaide United striker Lloyd Owusu in Indonesian derby clash

FORMER Adelaide United attacker Lloyd Owusu appears destined to face Reds striker Serginho van Dijk in a local derby in Indonesia.

Persib Bandung's manager Umuh Muchtar told an Indonesian newspaper the club is expecting van Dijk to front for the January 5 season kick-off. Owusu claims meeting van Dijk in an Indonesian derby next year is a possibility.

Van Dijk reportedly turned down an offer from former Reds coach Phil Stubbins' Bangkok Glass last week.

Van Dijk ranked third in the A-League's all-time goal-scoring charts with an average of a goal every two games is contracted to the Reds until March 31 unless Adelaide grants him an early release.

"There's rumours Serg (van Dijk) is going to go (to Indonesia) next January,'' Owusu said.

"Who knows what's happening but if he does play there, his team is the local rival.

"It's like the Man City v Man United games of the league.''

Owusu, based in Adelaide with permanent residency, will depart for Indonesia today with the intent of confirming a one-year contract as assistant manager and player for new Indonesian Super League club Pelita Bandung Raya.

The club backed by the Bakrie Group that also owns Brisbane Roar has signed former Philippines national coach Simon McMenemy on a three-year deal.

Owusu played this season with SA premier league club White City before McMenemy put out the feelers for the ex Ghanaian international.

"I was on Skype with him and it's a pretty interesting scenario,'' Owusu said.

"Obviously I'll be part of the management team and delving into team selections, Simon will be doing most of the coaching.''

Owusu, 35, is midway through his Asian Football Confederation B-Licence after returning to Adelaide from England this year.

Owusu currently runs a junior clinic - the SA Soccer Academy - with Neil Young, a Bournemouth legend and former Tottenham Hotspur youth player.

Owusu said he was hoping the Indonesian experience would add another perspective to his CV while Young continues to run clinics.

"This Indonesian chance will give me some experience and then I could come back and have a better chance to get a job with an A-League club,'' Owusu said.

"Unfortunately there's only 10 professional football clubs here.''

Adelaide officials have repeatedly denied The Advertiser requests to interview van Dijk since July.
